gReader Review (Android Feed Reader)

GReader is a free and commercial feed reader for Android devices that supports Feedly, the Old Reader, and local feeds.

I read a lot of feeds throughout the day, and most of them on my desktop PC. One of the first programs that I fire up in the morning is QuiteRSS, my Windows feed reader of choice, and it is hundreds of articles on feeds that I have a subscription for that I read after checking emails and moderating comments here on this site.

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum Review

WinX DVD Ripper Platinum is a commercial software for Windows to rip DVD discs to video formats that are playable by desktop, mobile and standalone devices.

DVD ripping may not have the same status today as it had years ago when streaming video was in its infancy, but it is still useful if you want to watch bought DVD movies on other devices such as your smartphone or desktop PC that you own.

A DVD Ripper converts the data on the DVD into another format so that it can be played on devices that don't have DVD drives.

Firefox, DRM, and the end of NPAPI

There has been lots of talk about the end of the classic NPAPI interface which is currently supported by all versions of Firefox to make third-party technologies available in the browser.

The most popular plugins currently supported are Adobe Flash and Java, but there are more plugins that Firefox may pick up to make their functionality available.

Windows 10: control app volume individually

If you are running a stable version of Windows 10 currently, you may have noticed that you cannot control the volume of apps running on the system individually.

While you can use the volume mixer to manage the volume of desktop programs, there is no such option to do the same for apps you installed from the operating system's store.

You are left with using the global volume control instead to change the volume, but that affects all programs and apps running on the system, and not only the one app that you want to change the volume for.

File Punter Review

File Punter is a free portable program for all supported versions of Windows that provides you with options to move or copy files using a rules-based system.

I like my files organized. What I mean by that is that I prefer them sorted into appropriate folders whenever possible.

So, instead of having one big folder full of mp3 files, I prefer them to sorted into folders named after artists and albums instead.

Browser editions overview

The browser editions overview lists companies that produce web browsers, the different versions of these browsers, supported operating systems, and download links for each.

Most companies that work on web browsers, be it Mozilla with Firefox or Google with Chrome, offer multiple editions of said browser to the community.

Most of the time, a stable version is offered and then one or multiple beta or development versions.

Pin Chrome tabs to your desktop

Panel Tabs is a browser extension for Google Chrome that allows you to pin any open tab in the browser to the desktop.

The core idea behind the feature is to make content available in panels on the desktop without affecting the actual browser window.

While this may not be necessary depending on your setup, if you use multiple computer displays or a high resolution monitor for instance, it may be beneficial in other scenarios.

A closer look at Active Hours in Windows 10

Active Hours is a new update-related feature of the upcoming Anniversary Update for Windows 10 that is already available in the latest Insider Build.

The main idea behind the feature is to make operating system updates less annoying by preventing automatic restarts of the system during active hours.

The Internet is filled with user reports that Windows restarted their system automatically after downloading Windows Updates, and that they lost work in the process or suddenly found themselves with a new version of Windows without them having a say in the matter.

This computer will soon stop receiving Google Chrome updates

If you are running Chrome on a Windows XP or Vista machine, you will have received a notification by now on the browser's new tab page that informs you that support for that browser will end soon.

The message reads "This computer will soon stop receiving Google Chrome updates because Windows XP and Windows vista will no longer be supported".

The program is provided as a 32-bit and 64-bit version for Windows, and compatible with all recent and not so recent versions of the operating system.

Smart Defrag 5 Review

Smart Defrag is a free defragmentation program for all versions of the Windows operating system starting with Windows XP.

File fragmentation can cause a number of issues on systems running Windows, but the most common one is that the loading of files takes longer than it should.
