Improve online privacy by controlling referrer information
Whenever you click on a link on a web page to open another one in the same browser, referrer information are sent to the linked site.
You can verify this for yourself by visiting our IP lookup script which reveals your current IP address and other information including the referer (it is a misspelling that is used in this way in the HTTP specification).
The referrer field was designed to provide the linked web property with information about where a user originated from.
Windows 10 after the live event: the key points
Microsoft revealed information about the company's upcoming operating system Windows 10 today during a live event.
While some questions are still left unanswered, the company managed to provide information about several topics of interest including free updates to Windows 10, whether Cortana will make an appearance, what the new browser code name Spartan does, information about DirectX 12, and whether Windows 10 for mobile phones will be unveiled during the event.
Leaked 2014 passwords show that people are still careless online
What have the words password, baseball, dragon, football, monkey, mustang, access, shadow and master in common?
They all made the word passwords of 2014 list. The list, compiled by Splashdata, is based on 3.3 million passwords that leaked during 2014.
One could say that 3.3 million passwords are not really representative when it comes to online password use but since that is all the data that is available, it can be used to analyze trends.
You can refresh Firefox on the Mozilla website now
Firefox users who experience issues when using the browser that they cannot resolve can use the browser's refresh feature (formerly known as Firefox Reset) instead as an automatic option to fix those issues.
Firefox users had two options up until now to refresh the browser: either hold down the Shift-key before start to open the Safe Mode prompt with an option to refresh the browser, or open about:support in the browser (if it still opens) and invoke it from there.
Mozilla adds Security information to Firefox 37 Developer Tools
If you want to find out more about the security of a connection to a particular website or a request that a site made while it was loading, then it is quite difficult to do so right now in most browsers.
While you can look up protocol information if https is used with a click on the lock icon in the browser address bar, and go from there to retrieve additional information, it is taking quite some time to do so.
Mozilla added a new security panel to the Developer Tools of Firefox 37 that reveal those information and additional information in compact form.
Chrome Tab Search is a fast tab switcher for Google Chrome
Chrome's system of displaying tabs in a single row without horizontal scrolling works well up to a point.
Eventually though you will notice that tabs cannot be identified anymore as they don't show any information whatsoever.
That's when tab switching can become problematic as it may happen that you will click around until you find the right tab you were looking for.
Convert a ton of file types online with Cloud Convert
Cloud Convert is a free online service that you can use to convert more than 200 different file types.
It may sometimes be necessary to convert one file type into another. Maybe you need to convert files so that you can load them on your mobile phone, or make sure they are compatible with a program that you have access to on your local system.
While you can run file conversion programs on your local system, you may sometimes be limited in what you can do locally.
Remove Firefox interface elements with UI Eraser
Mozilla Firefox is without doubt the browser that you can customize the most. Even its default options to display, hide or move user interface elements outshine the functionality that other popular browsers such as Chrome or Internet Explorer provide.
It takes two clicks (one on the Hamburger menu and one on Customize) to launch customization mode to edit the interface.
Windows, SSDs and Defragmentation: the definitive answer
Solid State Drives are great. If you switch from a platter-based drive to a SSD you will think you are in speed-heaven for the first time. Windows boots faster, programs start faster and everything seems to be improved speed-wise.
With the first generation of Solid State Drives, things deteriorated quickly due to limited write cycles and controllers that were far from optimal.
Analyze suspicious Windows executable files with PeStudio
If you install and run new software regularly on your Windows system, you may have come upon programs that you have a bad feeling about.
Maybe because you have downloaded them from a site you cannot trust, maybe because it is a new app that has not been reviewed anywhere yet, or maybe because of what it is supposed to do.
You may scan the executable file locally then and on sites like VirusTotal to find out if it contains malicious code.
The majority of free antivirus solutions ship with potentially unwanted offers
Developers and companies that offer free version of products have different options at their disposal to monetize their work.
From pro and business editions over donations to third-party offers. Third-party offers in this context means integration of other programs or services in the installer to earn revenue whenever users install those offers.
Since companies get paid when users install those programs and services, it is often the case that it is difficult to block their installation.
Add SD Storage to mobile phones without card slot with ExoDrive Case
Many modern day phones come without SD card slot which means that you are stuck with the phone's internal storage.
While 8 or 16 Gigabyte may look like much on paper, it may not last a day depending on how you are using your phone.
If you like to add music or videos to it for example, or take lots of HD photos, then you may realize that additional storage space may be beneficial, especially since some storage is automatically taken away by the operating system and pre-installed apps.
How to test Firefox add-ons in newer versions of Firefox
One of Firefox's greatest strengths is its add-ons engine that powers thousands of extensions that improve the browser in one way or the other.
The majority of these add-ons are created by third-party developers who are not associated with Mozilla.
If you have followed Firefox's development in past years, you may have noticed that add-on compatibility changed over time.
Find out what Facebook knows about you
Most Facebook users know that Facebook knows a lot about them but most do not know what this includes.
Some information are obvious; the things you post online or information that you have added to your profile.
Others, like interests, IP addresses, facial recognition data or photo metadata may not be as obvious or not accessible on the site at all.
If you want to find out what Facebook knows about you, you can request a copy of your data from Facebook to analyze it on your local computer.
Create and execute equations with Formula Calculator Equreka for Android
Depending on what you do, what you buy and where you go, you may come into situations where formulas can come in quite handy.
If you live in the US and plan your next trip to go outside the country for example, you may need to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, or Miles to Kilometers to understand what is going on.
The same may be true if you are currently in high school, a scientist or in another profession that uses or even depends on formulas.
