Double File Scanner: find duplicate files

Double File Scanner is a free portable program for Microsoft Windows operating systems that scans selected directories for duplicate files.

While there are plenty of programs out there for Windows that find file dupes, Double File Scanner is without the shadow of a doubt a convenient one to use.

To name a few alternatives that we have reviewed in the past: Duplicate Commander, Noclone, Doublekiller and CloneSpy.

Programs may use various methods to find duplicate files: from simple file name comparisons to comparing hash values, file sizes and a mix of options.

Microsoft: use Edge or Ads

Windows 10 felt in many regards like an operating system that was not ready for release back when Microsoft released it. This was the case for the new system browser Microsoft Edge as well, as it lacked a lot of features.

While it was highly optimized, it felt like a browsing shell more than a full browser in many regards. Microsoft worked on improving Edge, and it did so over time by introducing new functionality such as browser extensions.

Application Update Service Helper new Firefox system add-on

Application Update Service Helper is a new system add-on for the Firefox web browser that is pushed to all Firefox 50 or newer versions of the browser.

System add-ons work in many regards like regular add-ons that users install manually. They are installed and maintained independently from the browser core which is the greatest advantage.

This enables Mozilla to push updates to the browser without having to ship a new version of Firefox. The effect is that updates reach user systems faster and without service interruption.

Microsoft to discontinue EMET in July 2018

Microsoft announced yesterday that it has extended the support end data of the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit from January 2017 to July 2018.

Microsoft introduced EMET in 2009 as a standalone security program for Windows designed to block certain exploits from being executed successfully.

EMET was designed as a last line of defense against attacks carried out against Windows devices.

Firefox 51: SocialAPI deprecation

Mozilla plans to deprecate parts of SocialAPI, an interface designed originally to make social interactions faster and easier, in Firefox 51.

Mozilla introduced the SocialAPI in Firefox 17 as a way to make interactions with social network services like Facebook easier and faster.

The API offered access to various browser components, a chat window, sidebar, or share buttons, and allowed social providers to create add-on like extensions that users could install in Firefox.

Speed up Edge by disabling Flash

One of the annoyances of Microsoft Edge that I experience whenever I use the web browser is that it lags at times. This is noticeable for instance when websites are loaded from external sources but also at other occasions.

When a website loads for instance, it lags until all content is loaded. The loading itself seems to take longer than when other browsers are used but I could never put my finger down on the cause for this as it only happens on some sites and not all of them.

Web Storage Viewer for Firefox privacy add-on

Web Storage Viewer is a brand new browser add-on for the Firefox web browser that displays data stored by websites on the local system.

While many Internet users are aware of cookies and the danger to privacy they represent by now, the majority is probably unaware of other tracking means.

Web Storage, also known as DOM storage, HTML5 storage, session storage or local storage is such an option.
