Microsoft Security Updates January 2017

It is the second Tuesday of the month, and that means it is once again Patch Day over at Microsoft.

The company has released security updates and non-security updates for client and server versions of its Windows operating system, as well as for other company products today.

Our guide provides you with information on these updates. It lists all security bulletins that Microsoft released this month, and all non-security updates and security advisories.

The future of Yahoo’s Web Properties

If there are not any last minute changes, the last days of the once-mighty Yahoo company have begun.

Verizon offered $4.8 billion for the Yahoo brand name, core patents, and the bulk of the company's Internet properties, and Yahoo accepted the offer last year.

The only major properties not included in the deal is the stake in Yahoo Japan, and the stake in Chinese company Alibaba.

All other web properties will be part of Verizon once finalized. The following Yahoo properties will fly under the Verizon flag from that moment on:

How to setup Windows Hello for all Windows 10 users

Windows 10 supports Windows Hello, a biometric authentication feature that allows you to sign in using your face or fingerprint.

The main idea behind Hello is to make the authentication process easier. Users don't have to enter a password anymore when they sign in on a machine running Windows 10, but can sign in using the device's camera or fingerprint reader.

I have set up Windows Hello on the Surface 4 Pro device that I bought some time ago. To be precise, I enabled the face detection authentication option.

Windows 10 Build 15002 ships with many new features

Microsoft just shipped the first Windows 10 Insider Build of the year 2017, Windows 10 Build 15002, to the Fast Ring Insider channel.

The build is not entirely new, as it leaked earlier and many snagged it to be the first to report on new functionality found in that build.

If you have read the leaked reports, you know that Microsoft has pushed plenty of new features in that build.

CryptoPrevent 8: Windows malware prevention software

CryptoPrevent 8 is the latest version of the popular malware prevention software for devices running Microsoft's Windows operating system.

Windows users have quite the diverse selection of security tools at their disposal. Even if you ignore the options that Windows itself ships with, there is a variety of tools that users can install to improve their system's protection against malware threats.

CryptoPrevent falls into the supplemental category, meaning that it adds to the protection but should be used next to resident antivirus software or other protections.

Windows 10 Share “soon with” Ads

Microsoft is working on the next feature update for Windows 10 called the Creators Update.

The new version of Windows 10 will be made available in April 2017 according to latest projections, and it will introduce a series of new features and changes to the operating system.

The built-in Share functionality of Windows 10 will be updated in the Creators Update as well. We talked about this when the first screenshots of the new user interface leaked.

The core change is that the Share user interface will open up in the center of the screen instead of the sidebar.

ClickMonitorDCC: control your monitor’s brightness and contrast

ClickMonitorDCC is a free portable program for Microsoft Windows devices that enables you to control a monitor's brightness, contrast and volume using mouse and keyboard.

Most computer monitors come with buttons and options to change parameters such as the display brightness or contrast. While that is the case, it is usually not that comfortable to change the values using the built-in functionality.

On some device types, laptops for instance, you may not have these options at all, or only in basic form.
