OpenAI announces ChatGPT agent which can perform tasks for you

OpenAI has announced its ChatGPT agent, which can use your computer to perform tasks for you. Assign it a task, it will start it and finish it without your intervention.

OpenAI says that ChatGPT agent uses a combination of Deep Research to synthesize information, ChatGPT's intelligence and conversational capabilities, and Operator's ability to interact with websites.

Here are some complex task examples from the announcement:

"Look at my calendar and brief me on upcoming client meetings based on recent news,” “plan and buy ingredients to make Japanese breakfast for four,” and “analyze three competitors and create a slide deck."

Yes, the AI can create slideshows or spreadsheets. The agent will use its own virtual computer, by shifting between reasoning and action when required and complete the tasks for you. OpenAI says ChatGPT agent will request the user's permission before taking some important actions. The process can be interrupted by the user. Users can access ChatGPT agent by selecting "Agent Mode" in the composer.

ChatGPT connectors allow users to connect apps like Gmail, GitHub too. OpenAI warns that ChatGPT agent is still in its early stages, and hence is prone to mistakes. For more technical details, read the official announcement.

ChatGPT agent is rolling out today to Pro subscribers, and will roll out to Plus and Team subscribers over the next few days. Enterprise and Education users will be able to access it in the coming weeks. The service isn't available in the European Economic Area and Switzerland. ChatGPT Pro users have a limit of 400 messages per month, while other tiers get 40 messages a month.

Microsoft has introduced AI Agents in Windows, Opera has one in its Neon browser, Google also has some in the works. But we can expect companies to react to OpenAI's announcement, and hastily launch some more AI agents.

AI Agents, I can't really think why anyone would willfully let an AI control everything on their computer. But I'm sure such products will somehow attract tons of users. If there is one thing these services are good at, it's marketing, to convince you that their product is absolutely essential for your day-to-day life.
