Microsoft shuts down its Movies and TV Store for Windows and Xbox

Microsoft has shut down its Movies and TV Store for Windows PCs and Xbox consoles. Don't worry, you can access the movies and shows that you paid for.

The listing was spotted by The Verge's Tom Warren, who says that the store was shut down suddenly.  There was no official statement from the Redmond company. Microsoft launched the Zune Video Marketplace in 2006, and replaced it with Xbox Video in 2012. In 2015, the store was renamed to Movies and TV. Microsoft discontinued the app on Xbox 360 a year ago.

But that's not happening to current gen Xbox consoles and the PC app. A support page on Microsoft's website says this, "Microsoft no longer offers new entertainment content for purchase, including movies and TV shows, on Microsoft.com, Microsoft Store on Windows, and the Microsoft Store on Xbox."

This restriction only applies to buying and renting new content, you can continue watching any movie or TV show that you purchased, in HD Max resolution. To access your purchased media, you will need to use the Microsoft Movies & TV app on Windows or Xbox device. The web page also mentions that users in the U.S. can sign up for Movies Anywhere to connect select movies that they purchased, with other Movies Anywhere retailers. Microsoft is advising people to use services like Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, etc., to purchase new movies and TV shows.

Microsoft Movies and TV was only available in a few countries, the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. That isn't a lot, and it is possible that the store didn't have a lot of users, which could be the reason why it has been shut down.  Streaming services are becoming way too expensive, it's a shame that Microsoft had to shut the Movies and TV store.

Did you use the store to buy any movies or TV shows?
