How to disable AI Mode on Google Search

Have you tried AI Mode on Google? You want to disable that, don't you?

In March 2025, Google announced Gemini 2.0, along with an experimental AI Mode. This was only available for users in the U.S.

AI Mode was recently introduced in India. I didn't notice it since I use DuckDuckGo for the most part. But when I used Google a couple of days ago, I noticed that it was displaying a new tab, AI Mode. I was trying to find some games to buy during the recent Steam Summer Sale, and accidentally clicked on AI Mode a couple of times.

Google AI Mode is annoying

Now, Google does not allow you to disable the tab. Why would they? Whose bright idea was it to put it where the "All" tab used to be? It was done on purpose, they know people are going to click where the "All" tab was, it's a cheap way to get users to interact with the AI. I figured this is going to be annoying for a lot of people, hence this article.

Fortunately, you can disable it quite easily, thanks to the good people at uBlock Origin.

How to disable AI Mode on Google Search

1. Open uBlock Origin in your browser.

2. Go to the add-on's dashboard, and click on My Filters.

3. Paste the following code on the page.

! Google - Hide the "AI Mode" tab
www.google.*##[role="navigation"] [role="list"]>[role="listitem"]:has([href^="/search"][href*="&udm=50"])

4. Click on Apply Changes.

Brave Browser users (who don't have uBlock Origin) will need to enable Developer mode, and paste the code in the Create custom filters section. Hit save changes.

Brave Browser block AI Mode
I'm not sure how to do this on Vivaldi or Opera's native ad blockers. Sorry folks! Just use uBlock Origin if you can.

No AI Mode on Google

Go to Google and search, and you should no longer see that hideous thing again. Oh, I didn't show you what it does. Let's take a look.

Google AI Mode

Who wants to browse like this? Guess what, you don't have to be signed in for AI Mode to appear. As you can see, I'm signed out on Google, and the button still shows up.
