KB4090913 for Windows 10 fixes USB bug

Microsoft released the cumulative update KB4090913 for Windows 10 version 1709 (Fall Creators Update) on March 5, 2018. The update fixes an issue with some USB devices connected to the Windows 10 device.

Microsoft released several patches for Windows 10 version 1709 in February. One of the updates was KB4074588, a big cumulative update released on February 13, 2018 which addressed numerous issues but introduced bugs as well.

One of the bugs affected some USB devices and onboard devices that stopped working after installation of the update.

Microsoft wrote the following under known issues at the time:

After installing this update, some USB devices and onboard devices, such as a built-in laptop camera, keyboard or mouse, may stop working. This may occur when the windows update servicing stack incorrectly skips installing the newer version of some critical drivers in the cumulative update and uninstalls the currently active drivers during maintenance.

A workaround was not provided at the time which meant that affected users had no choice but to rollback the update to wait for a fix for the issue. Rolling back had problems of its own as KB4074588 addressed security issues in the Fall Creators Update version of Windows 10. That's actually one of the main reasons why I dislike how Microsoft handles updates on Windows 10; if something goes wrong, you cannot install the security updates only because you don't get them individually or at least as a package as on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1

KB4090913 for Windows 10 version 1709

KB4090913 is a quality update according to Microsoft that introduces no new operating system features. The update fixes the USB bug introduced in KB4074588 on February 13, 2018 according to Microsoft.

Microsoft notes that it will deliver the update through Windows Update and that admins and users may download it from the Microsoft Update Catalog site as well. A quick check on Windows Update did not return the new patch at the time of writing.

Installing the update brings the build of the operating system to build number 16299.251.

It is too early to tell if that is indeed the case. Users should note that the remaining known issues introduced in February or even earlier still exist.

• Windows Update History reports that KB4054517 failed to install because of error 0x80070643.
• Antivirus needs to set a Registry key to avoid that updating is blocked on the device.
• After installing this update, some devices may fail to start, and return INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.
