One for Android: read Hacker News, Product Hunt, Reddit and more

If you want to keep up with news, especially those in the technology and startup world, then it is usually necessary to read news on multiple websites to stay informed.

While you can read all news in a browser regardless of whether you are using a mobile device or desktop computer, dedicated apps are another option.

There are great apps available for popular sites such as Hacker News, Reddit or Product Hunt but barely any offers support for multiple sources.

One is a new application for Android devices that changes that. It supports a variety of popular news destinations including the following ones: Hacker News, Product Hunt, Reddit, Designer News, Slashdot, Medium, Github Trending, Readability Top Reads.

The application displays all news sources it supports as little icons at the top of the screen and you can swipe to the left or right to switch between them.

It does not support a combined view which is a bit unfortunate as it means that you have to swipe between news sources to read them all using One.

Each news source lists article titles, points and comments if available. A tap on a title opens the linked website in question directly so that you can read text, view images or watch movies on your phone.

News sources can be configured in the settings. There you can reorder the sources and disable those that you don't want to read at all.

One does not support accounts yet or options to customize the news feed. This means that you always get the most popular articles on the supported sites which may not always interest you.

There is for instance no option to only display technology related news in the news streams.

That does not mean that One is a bad app. It has a lot of potential and considering that it is only a couple of days old, it is likely that its author will improve the app in the near future.

What I would like to see is a unified view mode that displays news from all selected sources on a single page. The second feature that needs to be added is some form of customization either in the form of accounts for each site so that only the user news feed is returned for sites where this is appropriate or some general customization options to limit what is being displayed as news by the app.

If you are not interested in all those "fun" image and video posts on Reddit for example you should have an option to avoid those.

Good news is that the app requires only WiFi access as a permission and nothing else.
